In an exciting crossover between contemporary art and cutting-edge technology, renowned visual artist Roy Nachum has teamed up with design and production studio VolvoxLabs to create a unique sensory experience: ‘The Beach’. This installation, which has become a phenomenon in the art and technology world, offers viewers total immersion in an artificial coastal environment, all thanks to the integration of artistic and robotic elements.
Roy Nachum, known for his distinctive style and focus on sensory perception, has teamed up with VolvoxLabs, a New York-based studio specialising in creating immersive experiences using advanced technology, to bring ‘The Beach’ to life. This collaboration has resulted in an installation that defies expectations and redefines the boundaries between art and technology.
‘The Beach’ is presented as a robotic representation of a beach, combining elements such as sand, water, sound and light to transport viewers to a coastal environment. What distinguishes this installation is the integration of robotic technology, which adds an element of surprise and interactivity to the experience. Viewers can interact with the robotic components, creating a personalised and dynamic experience.
To carry out the performance, the team designed a customised system capable of controlling and activating various KUKA programmes for 8-hour days. They used TouchDesigner to create a playlist and develop robot control logic that would allow them to input, swap and start KUKA programs from outside the KRC (KUKA Robot Controller).
This approach gave them the flexibility to adapt to different scenarios and optimise the experience for each performance. By combining technology and creativity, they were able to create a unique and captivating experience for their audience.
This fusion of art and technology not only offers a visually and sensorially stunning experience, but also raises questions about the role of technology in artistic creation. ‘The Beach’ demonstrates how industrial robotics can be used to push the boundaries of artistic expression, offering new ways to experiment and interact with art.
The Beach’ installation has been presented at various locations and events, attracting a wide audience and generating a great deal of interest in the convergence between contemporary art and technology. This collaboration between Roy Nachum and VolvoxLabs represents an exciting step forward in the world of art and technology, demonstrating the potential of interdisciplinary collaboration to drive creativity and innovation.
At a time when technology is rapidly transforming every aspect of our lives, projects like ‘The Beach’ remind us of the power of human creativity to harness the potential of technology to create experiences that challenge our perceptions and inspire us to imagine a more exciting future full of possibilities.
