COBOTS: A NEW MUSE FOR MUSIC ARTISTS

Collaborative robotics, exemplified by Universal Robots' cobots, has moved beyond the industrial world to become a creative force in the arts. These collaborative robots are now being used in a variety of artistic disciplines—from dance to ceramics—showcasing their versatility and ability to inspire new forms of expression. One striking example is the Robot Orquestra project, presented at the Granollers Auditorium Theatre. In this performance, two robotic arms worked in harmony with the Granollers Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Corrado Bolsi, sculpting clay in sync with Haydn’s Symphony No. 59, known as the “Fire Symphony.” Thanks to a collaboration between ceramic artist Toni Cumella and programmers from the Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia, the cobots were able to interpret the music and adjust their movements to match the four movements of the composition—blending music and ceramics in a truly innovative way. Cobots have also made their mark in dance and opera. In 2019, choreographer Sol Picó performed alongside a UR10e cobot at the National Theatre of Catalonia, interpreting the song Un año de amor by Luz Casal. The synchronization between the dancer and the robot was seamless, highlighting how technology can enhance and amplify human artistic expression. In the world of opera, cobots have played a futuristic role. At the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, two UR10 robots were featured in a modern adaptation of Puccini’s Turandot. These robots didn’t just operate projectors and lighting—they also interacted with stage elements, helping to create a unique atmosphere that merged operatic tradition with cutting-edge innovation. The integration of cobots into the arts not only expands creative possibilities but also raises new questions about the relationship between humans and machines in the artistic process. These projects show that collaborative robotics can be a powerful tool for artistic expression, offering creators new ways to explore creativity and collaboration. In short, Universal Robots’ cobots are playing an increasingly important role in the art world, giving artists new avenues for expression and interaction. Their ability to seamlessly integrate into various artistic disciplines proves that technology and art can come together to create truly unique and moving experiences.
